White Trash Devil

In an unprecidented event, I managed to interview an entire band in one shot. Blackthroat, as is turns out, are old friends of WTD through their previous band Bitter End. They’re also cronies of WTD’s official house band, Artimus Pyledriver. I really fuckin’ dig these guys, so check ‘em out, and somebody get them a goddamn record deal.

White Trash Devil: Who are you, what do you do in the band, and who are your partners in crime?

Blackthroat: We pretty much all sat around and did this together. Blackthroat is Shane on vocals, Mike on guitar, Tim on guitar, Lee on bass, and Dave on drums.

WTD: Give us a little history on Blackthroat; how long you’ve been around, where the name came from, how your sound was developed…the usual bullshit.

Blackthroat: Three of us (Mike, Shane, Dave) were in a band called Bitter End that was kind along the same lines of music. We ended up breaking up and pretty soon after that started jamming with Tim and Lee. We started in march of 2003 and recorded the 1st 4 songs we wrote. We were all on the same level, so it works really good. As for the name goes, it kind of came out of nowhere. You’d have to just google it, and take a guess.

WTD: Goddamn, I loved Bitter End! I still have the demo CD in my CD case in the truck. I discovered Blackthroat on MySpace through our good friends Artimus Pyledriver, so you really have them to thank for this feature. They love having their asses kissed now that they’re big rockstars, so feel free to show AP some love.

Blackthroat: We can’t believe the support those guys have given us. It’s amazing. They’re an awesome band that deserves the attention they are getting. It was very cool to see Dave wearing our shirt in the video too! Which by the way is an awesome video.

WTD: You only have two songs on your MySpace page, but I understand there’s a four-song demo floating around. Have you gotten any attention from labels yet? You guys need to get an album done so I can get a free copy to review.

Blackthroat: Yeah the only release to date is the 4 song demo from 2004. We should have the new CD done by the end of July though. It’s gonna have 6 brand new songs. Our friend Scott is gonna put it out for us. His label is called Inner Journey. I think one of the last things he put out was the Clutch Pitchfork 7”.

WTD: I have to ask my obligatory MySpace question. MySpace is filled with attention whores, kid-touchers, and morons, but its also allowed me to find a lot of great bands that I probably wouldnt have heard otherwise. How important has that stupid site been for Blackthroat?

Blackthroat: It works good as a webpage for us. It lets a lot of people who would never hear us before get to check us out.

WTD: What’s the scene like in Delaware? I would think there’s a shitload of bands there, because I visited there in 2004 and all I wanted to do was lock myself in my hotel room and write songs about killing people.

Blackthroat: There’s a lot of bands around here. It’s pretty diverse. Bringing bands like Suplecs, Hidden Hand, and Earthride to Delaware make it a hell of good time too. Sometimes there’s 5 or 10 people at a show and sometimes 100 or so. It’s still fun and it’s something to do. Delaware is boring!

WTD: Give us five reasons why record labels should shower you with gifts, and why people should spend their hard-earned money to see you live.

Blackthroat: Well most of us hate our jobs and would be willing to tour. We don’t like to do much else than play music. Rock n’ Roll is a Savage Animal; it just rolls off the tounge. The only gifts we need are PBR and the green stuff. We are all serious musicians that care about writing good songs.

WTD: You guys are opening for The Hidden Hand on July 22nd in Philly. I would be there, if it weren’t for Rampage Jackson fighting Matt Lindland on pay-per-view that night, and the fact that I live in Ohio. How cool is it to share the same stage as an insane legend like Wino?

Blackthroat: We have been fortunate enough to have played with Hidden Hand a few times. It couldn’t be cooler thing to watch Wino, who is like a wizard when he’s playing guitar to shred in your local bar.

WTD: I listened to a lot of bands to pick this week’s Band of the Week, and you guys really stood out. You have a very unique, yet almost familiar sound (perhaps it’s the Bitter End connection). I don’t know how to explain it, but I fuckin’ dig it. Good luck with the band, and keep me in the loop. Now, feel free to take this opportunity to speak your mind and plug whatever you want. Just make sure you lock up on your way out…

Blackthroat: Thanks to you guys for doing this little feature on us. We’re glad people are into it. The new album will be out August so be on the lookout for that. Thanks to Hank III for all the shit he’s been doing for us. Tri-State Productions crew for starting to make Delaware fun again, Sower Of Dischord, Backwoods Payback, and Moonshine Mile for keeping it slow and heavy, Sherm and Earthride coming back again and again to visit us in Delaware and showing us how it’s done!
