Brodequin: Jamie Bailey
I recently had the chance to talk with one of Tennessee’s most brutal Death Metal acts, Brodequin. See what vocalist, Jamie Bailey, had to say about his band, porn, and much more!
WTD: So, what’s new in the world of Brodequin?
Jamie: Well, we have a new drummer. Things were not working out on a personal level between Mike (guitar) and Chad (drums), so Mike felt the only way to resolve it was to replace Chad… which he did.
WTD: Exactly, what is a Brodequin?
Jamie: Actually, it was a torture technique used in the 16-17th century and was considered a non-lethal method. The victim’s legs were tied tightly together and separated by boards. Then, steel and wooden wedges were driven between the legs with the boards separating them. It crushed the legs, leaving permanent disfigurement and sometimes infection.
WTD: How did the band come together?
Jamie: We were all in other local bands and tired of not being able to do what we really wanted, so Chad gave us a call and we got together. It worked out pretty well and we released a small demo. Soon after that, we released our first cd.
WTD: Who were some of the bands that inspired you to play Death Metal?
Jamie: In the beginning, speaking for myself, I would say bands like Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse. But when bands like Dead Infection came along, I knew their sound was more insane than that of the American bands and they were really pushing the level of brutality. I listen to European bands most of the time. There seems to be a higher level of metal coming from there.
WTD: Are there any newer bands that really impress you?
Jamie: I really like Disavowed! They put on a great show, as does Severe Torture. I think Patrick (Severe Torture) is easily one of the best bassists in Death Metal! I also like Aborted, Malignancy, Cerebral Effusion, and Defaced Creation.
WTD: Are there any bands you would throw to a pack of jackals?
Jamie: Ha! Just the trendy nu-metal bands who go around saying they are truly heavy.
WTD: Do you enjoy porn?
Jamie: Yeah, I like porn! Some of my faves are Sylvia Saint, Jenna Jameson, and Kobe Tai just to name a few. Also, I really keep an eye on the Czech girls.
WTD: Why is the snare drum so loud on your cd’s? Some of us would really like to know!
Jamie: That all comes down to where and how the recording was done because there was always some tension on where to record. The guy that did our first two cd’s was a great guy but his studio was limited to what it could do. As for the volume of the snare, Chad always mixed the drums with the guy who recorded us, so I never got involved in that. But I agree that the snare is too loud and that has always been a constant point of criticism… but it’s true!
WTD: What are your overall goals for Brodequin?
Jamie: Just to be able to tour and not have to spend any money out of our pocket to do it! Therefore, being able to play and expose as many people to our music as we can.
