The Illuminati - On Borrowed Time

  • Released: 2006

I wasn’t sure if a genre such as “stoner jazz” or perhaps maybe “stoner lounge” existed until I heard this impressive collection of songs from the Toronto based trio known as The Illuminati. To my happy ears, these guys have got it going on. Short bursts of catchy, well-written songs are found within.

These are the kinds of songs that are so memorable you will remember them for weeks on end, even if you only heard the album once. This is one record that is nearly impossible to put down. Messers, Godfrey, Gering & Sewell (in order of appearance) are to be commended for bringing the rock!

What we have here are no less than twelve incendiary rock classics…an audio feast for the senses. These guys certainly have a knack for cramming their craft into three minute nuggets and not a second is wasted on filler. Songs such as the title track, “Impressions”, and “The Jericho Mile” are among the standout tracks in an album that is simply chock full of them. The band plays tight and all the the arrangements are in the right place. I also like the “live” feel of this recording. It’s not polished but still sounds full…like you are right there in a club setting with the band right in your face. So there you have it, an album that might very well end up in my Top 10.
